Here’s the latest progress (for this past few months).
6/22/2014 – I’m now back on my goal weight. I have lost 16 lbs total and I’ve gained 5 lbs since May 22 (after about a year off. I still have some room to grow but this has been very encouraging). Now it will be much harder for me to increase weight, but if I can’t gain it at all by next year I may go heavier. I started off at 160 before this, so now I start at 175. I lost a lot of muscle, just because I used to be so strong! I just stopped trying to do too much and did more cardio and strength and have been eating more carbs and lower protein and less fat. My heart rate has also gone down after 3 months and my workouts have been very hard and I’ve put on an extra 20 lbs of muscle.

Training with high volume
If you’re trying to build muscle, you’d obviously want to train high volume. This is the easiest way to build muscle. You train for about an hour per week, so you’re training for about two days per week.
This gives you lots of energy, which you can then burn for strength gains.
Now let’s say you’re training for 10-12 sets of 10-15 reps and resting for an hour. If you use this methodology, you’ll have burned over 200 calories.
You’d do this program using a 12:1 split, which would mean you’d get 15 reps. Now with that split, you’re going to burn nearly 300 calories per workout.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT)

The only problem is that they don’t really understand that HIIT is more about intensity of training than volume.
To learn how intensity and volume differ, you should read books like HIIT Programming for Athletes, by Joe Dovizioso.
It’s a great read. He actually makes his strength gains from HIIT, so he knows what a HIIT workout would look like.
You’ve got to do lots of rest periods to build muscle. In fact, you shouldn’t use any rest periods at all. The goal is to maintain high intensity, and it’s better to do a single rep or so, rather than doing five or ten reps.
It’s time to break up your low repetition, high volume training session into single rep intervals.
The idea of HIIT training might be overwhelming to beginners and even intermediate trainees. You’ll get used to it eventually. You probably won’t need to do all 15 to 20 reps per session, or even a whole workout. What you want to do, is to do them over the course of a few sessions.
But you can still get huge gains from HIIT. The reason is that you’re not building muscle just by training with high volume but you’re also building strength and endurance. In short, they build a stronger, thicker, sturdier heart. This is why you are not just doing your body building workout when you do them right!
Keep this fact in mind when looking for the right kettlebell or Olympic lift for your goals. For example, a beginner may find Olympic lifts to be beneficial due to its increased cardiovascular capacity and increased muscle mass. In contrast, intermediate-level athletes may utilize kettlebells to improve conditioning without the need for supplemental work.
For some, the combination of kettlebell workouts and the right Olympic weights (or both) is enough to build great fat loss. This is why I include them as an option whenever I build a routine.
For others, you’ll find that kettlebell exercises are too hard for beginners or you just have a specific goal in mind.
For the more advanced user, using kettlebell workouts with a specific goal can be helpful. Here’s why you might want to include this approach in your daily workout routine.
While some bodybuilders like to do leg, back, and shoulder work on the ground, I prefer using high volume and low intensity training as much as possible.
What that means is that I favor the high-intensity movements because I can build more muscle. In the same way that you may use a higher volume of exercises in your home gym when you’re getting stronger, you can use a higher volume of exercises when you’re getting tougher.
