Now, the next stage of the metabolism is called the glycogen breakdown. This starts with the breakdown of carbohydrates into simple sugars. In doing so, there’s also the production of acetyl-CoA (which we’ll come to shortly), which helps release fatty acids from the fatty tissue.
Your body can handle a lot more glucose than it needs but can only metabolize so much of it. If the liver starts getting into glucose with every meal, it will metabolize it so quickly that the body loses all that glucose (this is called gluconeogenesis) and then stores it.
Your body cannot store glucose in your muscles as it can in the liver so it releases it as body fat – the most fat soluble fat in your body. The excess comes from the breakdown of fats into simple sugars which is also what happens to your muscles as you workout. Your muscles are not very good at storing energy – you can lose them very quickly. It’s like a small mountain being destroyed.
The brain and hormones that stimulate the muscles to function are called “endocrine”. To get the body to produce the right amount of insulin, an athlete must take a drug called metformin. The drug is only designed to produce small amounts of insulin — about a tablespoon a day for a man of average height. The more insulin a person eats, the more insulin the body produces.
At first, the “insulin” produced by the medication will be the body’s way of telling you that you’re doing a good job of storing and utilizing your body’s stored energy. Eventually, the insulin also causes your muscles to produce less energy.
Over time, “the energy you store in the long term gets converted to fat,” Dr. Gannon says. So what you have to realize with many athletes is that unless it’s being actively produced, it will not be able to properly use stored energy, Dr. Gannon says.
